Adjustable harness or H harness?

Let's start with what they have in common: both spread the pressure across the chest rather than the neck, both have the lead ring on the back, and both are the same price. The difference is in the shape, the sizes and the designs.

Adjustable harness

  • Adjusts separately at the neck and chest, so it suits dogs of all sorts of proportions.
  • Sizes XS to L (chest 35 to 80 cm); the Honey Stripes and Quilted Moka designs come in XXS to M.
  • Eight designs, from corduroy to the quilted Quilted Moka.

H harness

  • Also called an H-shaped harness: one strap around the neck, another around the chest and a third joining them along the back.
  • A lightweight design that leaves the shoulders free.
  • Sizes XS to L (chest 25 to 85 cm), in Burgundy Boho, Black Boho and Black Gingham.

If you'd like to mull it over, our blog explains which dog harness is best and compares the H harness with the vest style.

How to get the size right

Measure around the chest just behind the front legs, and the neck where the collar would sit. With those two measurements, find the size in the size guide and leave 2–3 cm of room.

Trust the tape measure more than the breed. One customer told us the XS didn't fit her maltipoo, and she's not the only one who's wavered over sizing. If your dog falls between two sizes, email info@beepaw.com with their chest, neck and breed, and one of us will get back to you. And if it still isn't right, you have 30 days to exchange or return.

Once it's arrived, here's how to tell if a harness fits properly.

Collar or harness?

For walks, a harness spreads the pressure across the chest rather than the neck. Even so, you don't have to choose: every design has both pieces to match. We go into it properly in harness or collar for your dog?

For small and medium dogs (and only them)

Beepaw started with Lia, a cockapoo, and our harnesses are designed for small and medium dogs. If yours is bigger than that, we'd rather tell you now than over a return.

They aren't designed to stop pulling, either: with the ring on the back, they won't hold back a dog who pulls. If yours pulls, we have an article on how to stop your dog pulling on the lead.

Fabric outside, mesh inside

On the outside, textured fabrics: corduroy, herringbone tweed, gingham check, boho print, teddy plush or quilting. On the inside, breathable mesh.

When it's time for a wash: delicate machine wash, inside a laundry bag, then air dry.

Dog harnesses designed in Barcelona

The idea for Beepaw was born in the UK, with Irene and her cockapoo Lia. Today we design harnesses, collars and leads in Barcelona, all made to match, so the look comes together without a second thought. More about us on our about us page.

If you'd like all three pieces, a set costs less than buying them separately. We deliver to the UK and across Europe, with free delivery on qualifying orders – see our delivery page.

FAQs

How do I know what size harness my dog needs?

Measure the chest just behind the front legs and the neck, compare them with the size guide and leave 2–3 cm of room. If the measurement falls between two sizes, email info@beepaw.com with the measurements and breed and we'll help.

Which type of harness is best for my dog?

It depends on what you're after. The adjustable one adjusts separately at the neck and chest and is the easiest to get the size right; the H harness is very light and leaves the shoulders free. Both spread the pressure across the chest rather than the neck, and both go up to size L.

How should the harness fit?

Snug but not tight: it shouldn't twist or shift as they walk, and you should be able to fit two fingers between the harness and your dog's body. We explain it in detail in how to tell if a harness fits properly.

From what age can my dog wear a harness?

From puppyhood, in the right size. The adjustable harness can be let out at the neck and chest as they grow.

Can I use any lead with the harness?

Yes. The lead clips onto the ring on the back, so any lead with a clip will do. If you'd like the full look, every design has a matching lead.

Will a harness stop my dog pulling?

No. The lead ring is on the back, so they won't stop a dog from pulling. What they do is spread the pressure across the chest rather than the neck.

What size of dog are they for?

Small and medium dogs only. The adjustable harness covers chests from 28 to 80 cm and the H harness from 25 to 85 cm.
